Administration’s cruel attacks on immigrants continue

August 12, 2019 Washington, D.C. – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today is appalled that the Trump administration finalized its rule penalizing immigrants for accessing government services to which they are entitled. Jody Rabhan, NCJW Director of Government Relations and Advocacy, issued the following statement:

“The Department of Homeland Security’s public charge rule is an affront to our Jewish values. We are commanded 36 times in the Torah to welcome the stranger. Instead, this rule, reportedly Stephen Miller’s “singular obsession,” will force immigrant families to choose between accessing government services, including food assistance or medical care, and keeping their families together in the United States. Since the rule targets social services, it will disproportionately impact people of color, low-wage earners, and those with disabilities.

“The National Council of Jewish Women has advocated for immigrant families for 125 years. Our members submitted hundreds of comments opposing this measure and we are undaunted by this latest policy. We will continue to fight for the right of all marginalized people, including immigrants targeted by this rule, to have to build new lives in our nation.”

The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
